Can you boil frozen chicken?
According to the USDA, yes, you can safely cook your frozen chicken, as long as you follow a couple of general guidelines.
In order to skip the thawing step and turn your frozen chicken into a fully-cooked, safe-to-eat dinner, use your oven or stovetop and simply increase your cooking time by at least 50%. In order to do this, make sure that your chicken is frozen in such a way that the individual pieces can be spread out on a baking sheet or skillet. In other words, they’re not all frozen together in a rock-hard cluster.
There’s one big caveat: Don’t try this in a slow cooker. They don’t exactly explain why, but presumably, it’s for the same reason we would recommend against it: because the slow cooker cooks things slowly, there’s a chance that the cold meat will spend too much time in the danger zone—the temperature range where bacteria are most likely to grow. In an oven or on a stovetop, the cook times are much quicker, and the meat won’t spend much time in that range. Instead, we suggest frying, baking, or boiling frozen chicken.
Of course, we would not recommend consistently relying on this strategy, as a bird that’s been thawed properly will likely cook more evenly and taste better.
How to boil frozen chicken:
Step 1: Pick a Liquid
The first step to boiling your frozen chicken is to pick a liquid. Water is the most common, but you could also use broth, wine, or even beer. Just make sure that whatever you use covers the chicken completely.
Step 2: Add Your Aromatics
Next, it’s time to add some aromatics to the pot. This could be anything from chopped onions and garlic to herbs and spices. Get creative!
Step 3: Bring the Liquid to a Boil
Place your pot of liquid on the stove and turn it up to high heat. Once it comes to a boil, reduce the heat to medium-low and let it simmer.
Step 4: Add the Chicken
Carefully add the frozen chicken to the pot. Make sure that the pieces are not touching each other so that they can cook evenly.
Step 5: Let it Simmer
Cover the pot and let it simmer until the chicken is cooked through. This will take longer than if you were cooking thawed chicken, so plan accordingly. A good rule of thumb is to simmer for 50% longer than you would for thawed chicken.
Step 6: Check for Doneness
Once the cooking time is up, use a meat thermometer to check that the chicken has reached an internal temperature of 165 degrees Fahrenheit. If it hasn’t, continue cooking in 10-minute intervals until it reaches the correct temperature.
Step 7: Let it Rest
Once the chicken is cooked through, remove it from the pot and let it rest for a few minutes. This will help to ensure that it’s juicy and flavorful.
Step 8: Drain Liquid and Shred or Chop Chicken
After the chicken has had a chance to rest, you can either shred it or chop it into smaller pieces. If you want to use the broth that the chicken was cooked in, make sure to drain it first. Otherwise, discard the liquid.
Step 9: Your boiled frozen chicken is now ready to enjoy!
